Quilted Santa

Designer: Stacey Kingman

Santa has a flawless figure thanks to the diagonal lines on the 18” X 24” Cutting Mat. The 45mm Comfort Grip Rotary Cutter cuts right through the lumpy layers of old uneven quilt scraps so easily! This guy was so easy to make with these great Fiskars sewing tools.

Instructions (Print version)

  1. Using the 45mm Comfort Grip Rotary Cutter, Easy-to-Read Ruler and Cutting Mat, cut two triangles of scrap quilt. The pieces will be 10” tall, and 7” wide at the bottom and 2” wide at the top. The angle lines on the 18” X 24” cutting mat will give a perfect guide to cutting these pieces.
  2.
  3. Cut four  leg pieces, 6” long, 1 ½” wide. Experiment with the foot shape and when you make one you like, use it as a template for the other three pieces. Stitch these pieces together so that you have two legs.
  4.
  5. Fit the legs into the center of the bottom of the triangles and stitch across, attaching the legs to the body.
  6. Stitch up the sides of the triangle, leaving a rough edge.
  7.
  8. Cut two 2” X 3 ½” pieces of quilt scraps and stitch to the top of the triangle. This will create the head, so be sure to use very plain pieces of quilt. At the neck, stitch right sides together so the rough edges will be on the inside where his neck meets his body. Continue stitching the side of the triangle up to the ends of these new pieces, rough side out.  He will look like he has a cone head, but we’ll fix that!
  9.
  10. Stuff triangle and head with batting.
  11.
  12. Cut a 5” X 8” piece of fabric for the hat. With right sides together, sew in half to create a 2 ½” X 8” tube. Turn it right side out and place over the head so that about 1 ½” of the face is visible. Adhere the hat in place with hot glue. Tie a knot in the other end of the hat and let it flop over.
  13.
  14. Paint the lower portion of his legs black. Paint two eyes on his face using the end of a dull pencil.
  15. Wrap lace around the knot in the hat and tie it. Wrap lace around the brim of the hat twice and hot glue the ends on the back. Wrap lace around the bottom of the triangle and glue in place. You may stitch this instead, but it is getting a little thick now. Wrap lace twice around the upper part of his boots and hot glue the ends on the back.
  16.
  17. Cut six ½” X 5” scraps of quilt, tie them in knots and attach as his beard.
  18.
  19. Cut two 2” X 6” scraps of quilt for arms. Attach to sides and weave through cookie cutter so that he is holding it in front of him.
  20.
  21. Adhere epoxy sticker to the vintage button card, tuck under his arm, adhere with hot glue.
  22.
  23. Tie gingham ribbon to his left arm.
  24.
  25. Stick a light red brad between his eyes and his beard.
  26.
  27. Place a Brown Heart Pin in the lace on his hat.
