Quilted Memory Book

Designer: Stacey Kingman

A shabby little book like this one looks imperfect by design, but it actually requires some careful measuring to make it go together so beautifully! The Easy-to-Read ruler, Cutting Mat, and 45mm Comfort Grip Rotary Cutter are essential to making sure I don’t waste even a tiny bit of my precious old quilt and that I cut all pieces precisely the same size.

Instructions (Print version)

  1. Print ten 3” X 5” photos with white borders. Ink photos to give them a vintage look and trim with Pinking Shears.
  2. Using the 45mm Comfort Grip Rotary Cutter, Easy-to-Read Ruler, and Cutting Mat, cut twelve 5” X 9” panels from an old quilt.
  3. With the Pinking Shears, cut ten 2” X 3 ½” pieces of various fabric scraps. Machine stitch these pieces to the top of each quilt panel as shown, leaving two panels blank for the front and back pieces. Cut one fabric scrap that is 4” X 3 ½” and sew it on the front cover piece.
  4. To make the printed twill strips, print a phrase on a sheet of cardstock. Cover the phrase with adhesive and the twill that will be printed. Run it through the printer again to print the phrase on the twill for each panel. Use a wider pieces of twill for the front cover piece.
  5. Sew old buttons on each end of the printed twill pieces. On the cover I added fabric scraps under the buttons. The Titanium Nitride Ultimate Craft Scissors are great for cutting off old button shanks.
  6. Using liquid adhesive, adhere photos to panels. Hand stitch photo corners to each corner of each photo with embroidery thread.
  7. To assemble the book, start on the left, line up the panels front cover first, followed by the back cover, then the four panels. Turn them face down and place the other six panels on these, face up. You will have six stacks of two panels each.
  8. Using the Rotary Cutter, cut ten 4” pieces of lace. Place the lace between the panels, leaving 2” at the top and 2” at the bottom as shown. You will have 1” of lace sandwiched between each panel and two inches showing. These lace pieces are the fabric hinges of the book. Pin these pieces of lace in place.
  9. To close the book, start on the right-hand side, fold the last panel toward the left, almost “rolling” panels the panels as you fold them toward the left. When you get to the last panel, fold it over the others. You should have the front cover on top and the blank cover on the bottom. Make sure you have enough length of lace between the panels to comfortably close the book as shown.
  10. Spread the book back out and begin hand stitching the panels together with a straight stitch around the edges of the panels. When stitching over the sections where the lace hinges are, take care to stitch over the lace well since this is where the book is held together. Remove the pins after stitching.
  11. Cut a 24” length of lace to tie around the book when it is closed.
