Pin The Candle On They Cupcake

Designer: Patti Milazzo

Need an easy party game for your little one’s next birthday?  Pin the Candle on the Cupcake is a fun, make-it-yourself paper crafted game your child will love to play again and again.  Since there wasn’t a template for my cupcake “top” I knew I’d need to draw my own design. (*see template) This is when I really like using the Ultra ShapeXpress tool (using the freehand attachment).  It allows me to smoothly follow the pattern I’ve created to create any shape.  I also used it to cut out the circle and swirl shapes found in the background.  (Note - Laminate your project for more durability.)

Instructions (Print version)

  1. Cut 5” square from Stripe paper; trim sides at angle to create the “cupcake” base and adhere to lower portion of background cardstock.
  2. Using Ultra ShapeXpress tool and template, cut the cupcake top from white cardstock; ink edges; machine stitch (if desired) and adhere on top of cupcake base as shown.
  3. Shape cut 5 – 6 swirls from same color cardstock as background and adhere around cupcake to give a subtle background pattern.
  4. Shape cut 4 – 1 ½” circles; ink edges and adhere to 4 corners of page.
  5. Machine stitch in red around edges of page.
  6. Shape cut 4 – 1” and 4 – ¾” circles from templates; ink edges and layer on top of corner circles.
  7. Apply letter stickers to create game title.
  8. Cut 6 or more candles from chipboard measuring: ¾”W x 3 ½”H.  Angle the top ½” of each candle for the flame.
  9. Cut flames from yellow cardstock and adhere top of candle.
  10. Cut 6 or more candles: ¾”W x 3”H from cardstock and adhere to chipboard pieces of the same size.
  11. Cut patterned strips slightly smaller than cardstock candles and adhere in centers.
  12. Note:  To make the game more durable, laminate surface of game and candle pieces.
  13. Use double stick tape on backs of candles as temporary adhesive when playing the game.
