felt ornament 2009 Click image to enlarge Designer: May Flaum Big or small, making gifts for loved ones this time of year is a favorite of mine. I've been bouncing ideas around for a photo ornament and I'm really happy with this felt one. I can change out the photo, it was actually quite simple to make, and it can double as a very cool present topper. My design can be made any size you like - I think next I will make a 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 version (to fit a wallet size photo). You could get fancy and make it a shape with the help of a Fiskars USX template, or leave it a simple rectangle like I have. Any way around it - it's sure to become a beloved ornament! Instructions (Print version)
1. First cut: 4 x 5 felt (and cut out center leaving approx 3/4" border) 4 1/2 x 5 1/2 felt 4 1/4 x 5 1/4 fabric (use pinking shears) fabric heart from template 1/2 x 5 fabric loop (finished size) for hanger
2. Zig-Zag or otherwise decoratively stitch along the inside border of the smaller piece of felt and set it aside. 3. Attach fabric loop and fabric rectangle to front of large piece of felt. Then flip felt over and sew heart using various (sloppy is ok!) stitches. (totally finished back shown below - and yes stitches from the smaller piece of felt are going to show - it's ok!)
4. Stitch along top ONLY on smaller piece of felt. Do two lines of stitches - one slightly larger than the other. Then place the smaller piece of felt on top of the large one and stitch the bottom and two sides to the backing. This leaves the top open to act as a pocket so you can slip a photo in or out!
5. Now get a chipboard button, cut out four holly leaves (from fabric), and cut a fabric circle slightly larger than the button and stitch onto the finished ornament. Add a regular button with fabric glue to the bottom to finish.
Note - take care to not stitch where the photo will go (unless your photo is inside already and you don't mind). My finished ornament allows for a 3 x 4 photograph.
