Butterfly Layout and Mini Tote Project

While shopping on-line recently, I saw a beautifully innovative clock design by Susanne Philippson {http://susannephilippson.com/ }.  Her design inspired me to create the butterfly sketch for the layout and mini tote that are my projects today.  I love that the concept can be interpreted in a simple style or with more detail as well as in using a paper medium or for a fabric project.

Instructions (Print version)

1.    Cut 8 ¼” circle from Super Size Circle Shape Template from patterned paper.
2.    Place Butterfly Template on portion of the circle and cut out the bottom part of the butterfly and disgard.
3.    Position the circle on the background cardstock and lightly mark where to stamp the flourish images then remove circle.
4.    Stamp Flourish images as shown with black ink using Stamp Blocks.
5.    Ink and distress outer edge of circle and adhere to layout then machine stitch circle in place.
6.    Cut out the same shaped butterfly from brightly patterned paper to match the circle as well as several other butterflies from both templates to layer on the page.
7.    Once all the butterflies are cut out, layer them and adhere them to the page.  Then Machine stitch through the center and attach a brad to each.
Note:  You can either fit the butterfly in the empty space of the circle or position it as I did to make it look as if it’s taking flight from the circle.

8.    Add title with letter stickers and/or printed cardstock.
9.    Stamp dotted circles on the page and attach a red brad to each.
10.    Cut strips of patterned paper; border punch 2 and layer the un-punched strip on top.  Adhere this near the bottom of the circle.  Then machine stitch across both the plain strip and where the decorative layers meet.
11.    Adhere a 3x5 photo above the top left of the paper strips and add a few buttons near the bottom left of the photo.
12.    To make the flower, Cut and punch 3 flowers of each size ( daisy shapes from each flower template, Squeeze Punches and May Flower Pop Up Punch) – 5 sizes total = 15 flower shapes.
13.    Ink and shape the flowers alternately to curve up or down.  Then layer and adhere them together.  Add a gem to the center.
14.    Squeeze Punch leaves; ink and crumple a bit.
15.    Adhere flower and leaves to the right of photo.

Bag Instructions:

1. Cut muslin 6” wide x 16” long. 2. Fold over ends twice and stitch across each with a decorative stitch. 3. Apply fusible web to black and pink fabrics according to instructions on packaging. Do not remove the paper. 4. Use the Super Size Circles to trace a 5.5” circle on the paper backing of the fusible web and cut out circle with Pinking Shears. 5. Trace butterfly design on portion of circle and cut out bottom half of butterfly; remove and discard this piece. 6. Trace butterfly design on paper back of pink fabric and cut out butterfly shape.

7. Remove paper backing from both circle and butterfly and iron onto one side of the muslin. 8. Machine stitch around circle and butterfly twice. 9. Attach decorative trim with machine stitching. 10. Fold muslin in half with right sides facing in and pin. 11. Cut cord to desired length and also pin to where sides will be stitched. 12. Machine stitch along left and right sides. 13. To finish, stitch bottom corners if you wish the bag to be able to sit flat on a surface – optional. Then turn bag right side out.
