Designer: Lisa Truesdell This super snuggly baby quilt started out as a pack of coordinating flannel receiving blankets. While you’ll have to devote a fair amount of time to making a keepsake piece like this, I think you’ll find that the actual process is rather easy – and there’s no better reward than seeing the little one in your life wrapped up in something you made. I’ve also included directions to use your leftover fabric to make some little stuffed stars – they’re the perfect size for little hands.

Quilt Instructions: 1. Pick out three coordinating flannel receiving blankets. You’ll want to look for ones that are big (mine measured 34inx34in) and thick. Prewash them. 2. Set aside one blanket to use for the back. Using your rotary trimmer, cut the other two blankets into 5x5in squares. 3. Lay out the squares in a grid, 7 across and 7 down. 4. Iron fusible interfacing to the back of your fabric. Use the USX Stars template to trace stars of various sizes onto the back of the interfacing. Cut out the stars using your MicroTip Scissors. 5. Arrange the stars on the quilt squares. Iron into place and then machine stitch around the borders. 6. Starting at the top left corner of your laid out squares, lay the second square on top of the first square so that the right sides are facing in. Stitch along the right side using a ¼ in seam allowance. Open this so that both squares lay flat and lay the third square on top of the second square and repeat. Finish the rest of the first row this way. 7. Go down each row, sewing the squares together as you did in step 6. 8. Now that all of your squares have been sewn into rows, iron them so that the seams lay flat. 9. Place the second row face down on the first row. Try to align the seams of your squares. Pin the rows together, and then stitch them together using a ¼ in seam allowance. 10. Repeat step 9 for all of your rows, and then iron all of the seams flat. 11. Take your quilt top and lay it face down on the remaining receiving blanket, so that the right sides are both facing in. Pin into place. Stitch around all 4 edges, leaving a 2in gap on one side. 12. Turn the quilt right side out through the gap that you left. Iron the edges to press them flat. Hand stitch the gap closed. 13. Sew diagonally through the solid squares in both directions.
Star Rattle Instructions: 1. Lay 2 leftover quilt squares together, right sides facing out. 2. Using the USX stars template, trace a star onto the fabric. 3. Machine stitch around the star, leaving a small gap. 4. Stuff the star. 5. Add a small bell or rattle into the stuffing. 6. Machine stitch the gap closed.
