Baby Burp Cloth

Designer: Susan Weinroth

I made a bunch of these fabric-covered burp cloths before my son was born last month.  They are a stylish alternative to the standard plain cloth – and also make a great gift!

Instructions (Print version)

  1. Note: Prefold Diaper used in example (and for direction measurements) measures 19x13 inches (make sure to adjust measurements if your diaper/burp cloth base measures differently).
  2. Trim 3 panels of coordinating fabric.  Bottom panel will measure 13x6.  Middle panel will measure 13x4.  Top panel will measure 13x10.
  3. Pin middle panel to top and bottom panel and stitch together each 13 inch side using a ¼ inch inseam.  Iron inseam open.
  4. Pin edges of now large fabric panel (already stitched together) right side down to prefold diaper.  Stitch edges using a ¼ inch inseam allowance.  Leave a 2 inch opening on one side to turn right-side out.
  5. Turn burp cloth right-side out.  Iron flat, removing wrinkles and preparing for top-stitching.  Iron-in edges from 2 inch opening (top stitching will close this opening).
  6. Top stitch around edges of burp cloth, approximately ¼ inch inwards from edge.  Top stitch along top and bottom of middle panel seam as well.

*Be sure to launder with baby-friendly detergent prior to use!
