Handheld Rotary Cutter

Handheld Rotary Cutter

How to Hold

Place thumb on orange lock.  Hold in parallel position to cutting surface.  Roll forward in a natural extension of the arm movement as though you were reaching out to shake hands.

Learning to Cut

For straight cutting and enhanced accuracy, use a ruler; if fabric is longer than the ruler, exert pressure on the ruler and step or slide it across the fabric as you cut.

When first learning to cut with a rotary cutter, practice on fabric remnants.  Rotary cutters will cut up to 12 layers of fabric.  Practice with various amounts of fabric to determine the number of layers you are comfortable cutting.

Both standing and sitting are recommended positions when cutting.  It depends on your preference.

Maintaining Blade Quality

Keep a sharp blade in your cutter.  A dull blade is more dangerous than a sharp blade.

Always use a cutting mat.

Keep spare blades on hand.

When buying a new blade, take it out of the package and wipe the excess oil off.

People who live in humid areas will find that steel blades rust very quickly if exposed to the air without the protection of a light coat of oil.  Use very fine sandpaper to remove rust spots and keep blades well oiled to avoid further deterioration.

Protect blade by returning it to its housing when not in use.

Replace blade when it doesn’t cut through all layers, and when cutting produces ragged edges, or if a slight drag is felt while cutting.
